New Suzuki Jimny EV teased in electrification plan

Suzuki has given us a glimpse of an all-electric Jimny set to arrive before 2030

Suzuki Jimny EV teaser silhouette

The current Jimny is only available in the UK as a commercial van model due to the regular version not complying with emissions regulations. In time, though Suzuki will boost the eco-credentials of its little off-roader by introducing an all-electric replacement.

We spotted a rather simple drawing of a Jimny-shaped model in Suzuki’s product plan for the rest of the decade, including it within its stable of five battery-powered cars destined for Europe. Suzuki says the powertrain ratio within its range of models will be split 20 per cent for hybrids and 80 per cent for fully-electric cars.

The silhouette of the Jimny shows an illuminated grille and a modern LED interpretation of the car’s round headlights. A boxy body is instantly recognizable as a Jimny, coupled with plenty of ground clearance. The structure of the Jimny EV is expected to be a ladder-frame architecture and the continuation of four-wheel drive will also be likely.

A hybrid version of the Jimny may well appear with a powertrain taken from the Vitara hybrid. This could allow for a 127bhp, 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol mild-hybrid or a full-hybrid with a 113bhp 1.5-litre engine. The 60kWh battery used in Suzuki’s recent all-electric eVX concept will probably be too large to fit within the Jimny’s platform.

The first Suzuki EV will arrive in Europe in 2024 and it’s not likely to be the electrified Jimny. In terms of pricing, the current Jimny Commercial costs from £20,115 (including VAT) so expect even a hybridised Jimny to head nearer the £25,000 mark.
